The Yard: The Lowly Clothes Pin

[pb_blockquote component_description=”Blockquote” author=”Lindsey Vonn”]I find folding laundry very relaxing.[/pb_blockquote]

The one piece wooden clothes pin was invented by the Shakers in the 1700’s, but it wasn’t until 1853 in Springfield, Vermont that David M. Smith invented the modern clothes pin we know today. Two small pieces of wood attached together with a small spring that allows it to grip both the fabric as well as the clothesline. Smith was an avid violinist and claimed to do his best thinking while playing. It was during one his musical sessions that he came up with the idea.

In our house, you can’t too far without stumbling across one of these. They’re either on the line, in a basket, in a drawer, or holding a bag chips closed in the cupboard or a bag of frozen veggies in the freezer.
