Porch Life: The Boston Fern

There are probably people who know our house as the one with the big ferns on the porch all summer. A local charity even borrows them each fall to decorate an outside fundraiser they do every year. They are as much a part of our house as the American Flag and the picket fence. But we didn’t always have them.

Not long after we first had the wrap-porch built, Uppie decided we needed hanging ferns to decorate it with. I’m usually hesitant about these things. We’d just built it, with a lot of headaches and considerable expense, so I wasn’t terribly anxious to start putting holes in it, but I agreed and placed eight hooks, one between each of the columns, and we hung Boston Ferns that we’d gotten from a big box store for like $12 each.

They add so much flavor to the look and feel of the porch that it’s hard to imagine not having them. They add that big of green in an otherwise, white and brown environment, practically inviting the green grass from the lawn and the leaves from the trees, into the house.

They start out small—just shitty, little hanging pots, but by October, they’re massive. We usually just end up throwing them out, but last year, several people came and took them all. We don’t know how they made out.
