Porch Life: The Wrap-Around Porch

[pb_blockquote author=”Tommy Shaw”]”When I was about 3, my grandfather used to give me and my sister a nickel to sit out on the front porch with him and sing songs.”[/pb_blockquote]

When we first bought our house in 1997, it had two small porches, one in the front and one on the side, which weren’t good for anything other than keeping the pizza guy dry in the rain while he waited for to answer the door. They were serviceable, but not livable or enjoyable.

So one of the first things we did once we could afford it, was to rip down the old porches, tear out the worthless gardens that used to fry in the summer heat, and build a large, wrap-around porch. We designed every aspect of it, including tongue and groove floors and ceilings, which they all sort of thought we were nuts for doing. They were expecting to just use pressure treated lumber like everyone else did on a deck.

Today, it sports a few rocking chairs, and our treasured Boston Ferns, and a random milk can or two.
